Presidente Alvaro Uribe Velez

Palacio de Nariño

Bogotá, Colombia

Estimado Presidente Uribe:

Dear President Uribe :

We the undersigned are deeply concerned by the message issued by members of the AUC paramilitaries, which directly threatens with death the Polo Democratico and its Presidential candidate, Carlos Gaviria Diaz. Candidate Gaviria and his party are an expression of the Colombian people. They are entitled to protection in their campaign. We urge you to denounce the threats made in the AUC message and to take back and apologize for the classification you made of your electoral opponent and his movement as "disguised Communism". We and the rest of the world, including the elected representatives of the United States people, will be watching closely your actions and those of your government to see if the May 28 presidential elections are free and fair.
